Meditate the zooming thoughts away

A simple meditation to put the brakes on incessant thoughts.

WHAT

Did you know that the average person thinks 70 to 80 thousand thoughts a day? 90% of those are the same thoughts you had yesterday and the day before, and some of those thoughts are not even true.

Experts tell us to slow down, and be present, but what can you do about this plague of thoughts that can create disorder and chaos, wrecking any opportunity to be present and free? Perhaps meditation may just be the tool to slow things down a little.

WHY

Incessant thoughts can behave like speeding cars on a busy multi-lane motorway, thousands of them zooming around, missing stop signs and creating havoc, “notice me, notice me” they say. They can consume you from the moment you wake up; to the moment you fall asleep.

Meditation is a powerful technique that enables the nervous system to calm. Resting the mind and slowing down the constant barrage of thoughts.

HOW

Meditation is often tried once or twice, found to be too difficult, and then put in the too hard basket. Learning any new skill takes time, and the more you do it, the easier it will become.

Follow this grounded meditation to get things started:

Imagine you are lying down on a bed of lush green grass.
Feel the earth below you and breathe in the fresh beautiful air.
Close your eyes and allow your attention to move to your feet.

Now imagine your feet growing roots and moving deeper and deeper into mother earth.
She is grounding you, connecting you to this incredible planet that we live on, they move with ease through the coolness of the soil, mother earth welcomes them,
she welcomes you.
A golden light appears within her hands and she guides this light through the roots of connection to your feet, bathing them in warmth, the light moves up your legs, spreading to your torso, neck, and head.

You see your whole body wrapped in shimmering golden light.
You take a breath and know that this light is healing your body, soothing your mind and bringing you back home to you.

Allow yourself to stay here as long as you wish, whether it’s a few seconds or a few minutes, longer if you wish.

Give thanks to mother earth for her healing light and bring your awareness back to your body. Breathing gently now through the nose.

You open your eyes feeling refreshed and connected.
